Happy 2018!! Cannot believe a new year has begun. This is always a great time to get a fresh start and sort of hit the refresh button and set some goals for yourself. It can be quite overwhelming but I have a few tips for setting new goals.
Many times people set these really big goals but half the time never follow through with them because they were too ambitious and didn’t set it in an attainable way. For example, someone will say I want to be healthier and lose X amount of weight so the first week of the new year they try to go to the gym 5 times a week when they never went to the gym before. Most people are setting themselves up for failure because they will get burnt out very quickly and give up. They key is to ease into any new goal you set and don’t set too high of expectations but at the same time push yourself. So here are a few tips to help you out for achieving your 2018 goals!
The marketing girl in me found this to be the best way… In marketing goal setting is done via the S.M.A.R.T. method and is actually so helpful.
ONE: Make it Specific
Try to get a little more specific than just ‘I want to be more organized.’ Yes that’s great, but in order to really make it happen, you need to be more specific because let’s be real, if you are living in disarray, then your whole life isn’t going to get in order within the first month. So something like I want to be more organized financially. THAT is so much more realistic.
TWO: Make it Measurable
This means you are identifying what it is you want to see or feel when you reach that goal. Whatever it is make sure you have this in mind when setting the goal.
THREE: Make it Attainable
As I touched on this earlier, you want to make sure whatever it is that you are doing is not too ambitious. It’s totally great to have these big dreams but know it may take a whole year to have just a little part of your big picture. Of course, I want to be healthier, grow my career, and find love but realisticly (and unfortunately) I don’t think all those things will happen for me in one year. So like I was saying about the organization example, maybe choose one aspect of you life you want organized each month instead of all in the first month.
FOUR: Make it Relevant
Ask yourself this question… Why do you want to reach this goal?
FIVE: Make it Timely
I suggest setting a time frame you would like to accomplish you goal by or even multiple time frames. So going back to the last organization example, you want to have this done in a certain amount of time. Or if you want to be healthier build up to a workout routine on your own pace.
I hope these tips are helpful for setting and achieving your goals not only just in 2018, but any time! I wish all of you a happy & healthy 2018.
